A Christmas Poem

by P Hutton
(Staffordshire -UK)

There was a time we use to share at Christmas and year-round
There was a time we use to love with laughter, tears of joy
There was a time we use to hope for strength and togetherness
There was a time we yearned for peace and of course I still do
How time has changed we share no more, or maybe, I’m not sure
Where is the laughter? There is no joy, there’s nothing but despair
We gather strength just like a storm to devour and destroy
We talk of peace but deep within it sounds more like a mouthpiece
You can believe but then again I know that you will not
It is Christmas time and to my head the pain’s more like a shot
